Monumental Inscriptions

Auchencairn cemetery contains some 400 graves, none of which are of great antiquity; the earliest appear to be from the mid-19th century. However, the inscriptions on the headstones do contain a large amount of information relating to families of the local area that will be of interest to those who might be carrying out family history research.

It was contemplated that a photographic record be made of the headstones to aid that research but it has recently been discovered that this has already been done! There is an excellent website that has photographs not only of each headstone at Auchencairn, but also at a number of other cemeteries in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. Please click on this link to go to that site:

Please Note: In order to save time looking through each record simply use the “search” facility – just the surname will do.
